Tai Chi Practice Swords (Jian)
These are the official Branson Tai Chi practice swords we use in class.
We will begin learning a Wudang Jian/Sword Tai Chi form the week of Feb. 4, 2024. It is required to have a practice sword to perform this form.
There are two types of practice swords that we recommend: A wooden sword or a retractable stainless-steel sword. There are benefits to each outlined below.
Wooden Sword
- Solid & won’t accidently collapse
- A bit lighter
- A weapon in itself, can be used to defend
- Less investment cost
- Negative: Need larger space to store it.
- Negative: Not as balanced.
Cost: $35
------------------------------------------
Retractable Steel Sword
- More realistic as it is stainless steel
- Accurate sword weight 1.5 lbs
- Portable, collapses to 9”
- Has tassle and is more balanced
- Negative: Can collapse if not fully locked
- Negative: Costs more.
Cost: $50
------------------------------------------
Whether you choose the wooden or retractable steel sword, it is a good start to your Jian training and will allow you to get a feel for the sword.
You will need to decide and pre-purchase your sword through Branson Karate & Tai Chi on or before Feb. 1, 2024 for it to arrive in time for the first sword class.
*Note: It can be exciting learning the Jian/Sword. However, we recommend holding off on purchasing a live blade, a REAL Tai Chi Sword, until you have learned the basics. Always start with a practice sword. If interested in a real, sharp Jian in the future, talk to your Shifu for how to purchase a good one as there are many inferior out there. Also, ONLY the wooden sword or retractable steel sword are permitted in class training.
